Pune NCP corporator arrested for betting, bailed within a day

Five people, including a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), were arrested by Nigdi police on Monday for betting on a cricket match, said assistant police inspector (API) Devendra Chavan.
The five men were identified as Javed Ramzan Sheikh (47), corporator from Kalbhor Nagar under Pimrpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) area and resident of Vitthalwadi in Akurdi, Zakir Mastan Sheikh (29), resident of Vidyanagar in Chinchwad, Pravin Shivaji Pawar (36), of Dattawadi in AKurdi, Rakesh Nemichand Mehta (37), resident of Balajinagar in Dhankawdi and Navin Bhagwan Mittal (43), of Nayar Colony in Chikli.
The complainant in the case was registered as assistant police inspector Yogesh Shankarrao Awhad of Nigdi police station. The case was registered under Section 4 and 5 of Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act.
They were arrested for betting on a match held during the Tamil Nadu premier league, API Chavan said. They were produced in a local court on Tuesday and were granted bail, API Chavan who is investigating the case, added.
They were found during a police raid based on the information provided by an informant, API Chavan said.
The police found the men in a flat in Nayar Colony in Sane Chowk area of Chikhli in the late hours, around 11:30 pm, on Monday night.
The police recovered money worth Rs 53,500 in cash, a television set, mobile phones, among other things, collectively worth Rs 2,77,150 from the five of them.
