In 2018, from January to April, as many as 165 minors were apprehended for driving vehicles illegally and a fine of 82,500 was recovered from them. In 2017, the figure stood at 610, wherein a fine of 3.05 lakh was recovered.

Traffic officials said that the increasing trend of minors riding bikes was due to lack of oversight and control by parent over their kids, which is aggravating the situation.

Prabhakar Dhamale, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), traffic, was the key person who took the decision to arrest the uncle and book the father after he was briefed on the case by the Warje traffic division. Dhamale took the instantaneous decision under the guidance of Ashok Morale, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), traffic.

Dhamale said, “We want to make the roads safe for residents and want to ensure that minors do not ride on roads. It is the parents’ duty and responsibility to ensure that the traffic rules are being followed by them and their children. In our experience, stopping minors, who indulge in rash and negligent driving, is also a dangerous task for the police, as it can also lead to accidents.”

“We are going to create more awareness about this so that accident rates can be brought down through parental and societal support,” Dhamale said.

Details sought in Praneet Nimhan case, says traffic police

Recently, four juveniles were arrested by Chatuhshrungi police for physically assaulting Symbiosis student Varun Desai.

The main accused, Praneet Nimhan, son of Pramod Nimhan, former NCP corporator, was driving the car without a license. Moreover, the car is in the name of his grandmother and the police have not yet arrested the car owner or booked the parents in connection with the case.

Desai’s parents had expressed concern over the manner in which the Chatuhshrungi police hurriedly produced the youngsters before court and handed them over to their parents. Social workers monitoring the case had opined that the four youngsters should have been sent to an observation home before being handed over to the custody of their parents.

The traffic branch will write to the Chatuhshrungi police station and modus operandi bureau (MOB) to source out more details of the case involving Praneet Nimhan. Praneet is the prime accused in Varun Desai assault case and has a case registered against under the Motor Vehicle Act in February 2018. The police will now initiate a probe and will also ascertain the age of Praneet so as to verify whether he is a juvenile or an adult.
