Kamla Nehru Park located in the city was established in 1956. It has since a decade attracted elderly as well as children to the park.
Ashok Ghorpade, garden superintendent, said that this park was started by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and has since become a favourite for many.
Kamla Nehru Park is located between Prabhat road and Bhandarkar road near Deccan Gymkhana. Besides a playground, the garden also has two fountains which were earlier a major attraction for children.
Officials from the garden department informed that one of the major attractions in the park is an Indian Air Force property, jet (HAL HF-24 Marut), an aircraft model kept at the entrance in the north side of the park. The garden is also known for huge old trees.
According to the garden department, there are a total of 330 trees of which 186 are big ones. The most famous out of them, is the Gauripati (Couroupita guianensis). This tree is known by a variety of common names including the cannonball tree. There are medicinal uses for many parts of this tree. Extracts of several parts of the tree are said to be used in treating hypertension, tumours, pain, and inflammation. It has been used to treat common cold, stomach ache, skin conditions and wounds, malaria, and tooth ache.
Apart from this, the garden also has trees like mango, ashok, peepal, sandal, eucalyptus, royal palm, suietenia mahogany and tamarind. There are snack vendor carts outside the park whose number has grown over the years.
