Gajajan Shepal, a professor in the J J School of Arts used to travel between Pune and Mumbai every day on a motorcycle. In August 2005 he met with an accident while going to Mumbai.

This is his story.

“It was not to save money but to have freedom and convenience. My motorcycle skid near Dehu road when I was on my way to Mumbai. The motorcycle skid because small iron balls were lying on the road. I could not see them because of the dark. My right leg got trapped under motor cycle.

The medical tests found that my knee was broken and doctors warned me that it could lead to permanent disability. I was in hospital for one month and had to undergo a major surgery. I was home for a period of eight months.

I am surprised now why I used to travel between Pune and Mumbai every day on a motor cycle.I am an artist and was eager to have the freedom to click photographs or to draw paintings. I enjoyed this freedom and followed my passion. But I had to pay some price for it. I used to wear specially made shoes and used to take all the precautions.

Still I look at the accident with a positive attitude. I wrote books when I was lying in bed after surgery. I have now almost recovered by the grace of God and will power. My doctor always said in a jovial way that every person must meet with a minimum of one accident in life because it is a big lesson.

I have learnt a lot after the accident. My life completely changed. Most importantly, I shifted to Mumbai after the accident because it wasn’t possible for me to travel between Pune-Mumbai all the time. I could hardly drive a motorcycle after that accident. Now I drive a car and I enjoy it and especially since I have become more cautious after the accident. I avoid night driving and don’t ever overtake, rather just allow others to overtake.

As an artist, I have helped traffic police to make posters on road safety. I am very cautious about traffic rules. Whenever I see somebody violating rules, I communicate the vehicle number to the police. Traffic rules are very important for human life and all of us must respect them.
