Two persons were injured when a tree collapsed on the changing room, before falling into the Rajashri Shahu swimming pool, in Somnath Peth area on Monday morning. The duo suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital by residents of the area.
Earlier, on July 24 and September 17, Hindustan Times had reported several tree falling incidents across the city during monsoon and the threat they posed. The civic administration, however, has been unable to trim the tree branches in the absence of the Tree Cutting Authorities. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had pulled up the civic body and asked them not to carryout tree cutting till it constituted the Tree Cutting Authority.
Meanwhile, on Monday morning, trees near the changing room of Rajashri Shahu swimming pool collapsed. According to witnesses, one of the injured persons was inside the changing room.
Recently, Aslam Khan Pathan (40) was driving his autorickshaw when a tree fell on the vehicle, crushing the rickshaw and injuring him. In the same incident, another person, standing at the bus stop, was also injured. In another such incident, a 57-year-old yoga teacher and Doordarshan anchor identified as Kanchan Nath, lost her life after a tree fell on her in Chembur, Mumbai.
After these incidents, the issue of trees posing a danger to residents, especially during monsoon, was taken up by residents in Pune. However, the authorities seem to have not taken any action on this.
Fire department told HT that it received a call on Monday morning, about 8 am, after which they rushed to the spot with horticultural department officials and cleared the tree. Rajaram Kedari, a fire employee on the spot, confirmed that two persons were injured and hospitalised. “The tree near the swimming pool compound wall got uprooted and fell into the pool. We are trying to find the exact reason behind.”
