The district police, on Saturday, seized 1.9-kg heroin worth Rs 10 crore in the international market from three notorious smugglers near Talwandi Bhangerian and Badduwal villages under Dharamkot subdivision in the district.
Charanjit Singh, senior superintendent of police (SSP), said that the accused, who have been arrested, were identified as Jaswinder Singh alias Happy, Vijay Kumar Vijay Sidhu, residents of Slachan village under Shahkot subdivision in Jalandhar district and Massa Singh, a resident of Sherewal village in Moga district.
Vijay Kumar Vijay Sidhu is a citizen of Sweden and he has been staying at the United Kingdom since 1998, the police said.
The SSP said on a tip-off that some notorious smugglers were trying to sell heroin in different parts of the district, a special police team was formed under the supervision of senior police officials to nab the accused.
When the police team stopped a Swift Dzire car near Talwandi Bhangerian, the driver tried to flee from the spot, but the cops nabbed him after a short chase, said the SSP.
He said, "During search operation, we found 1.3 kg heroin from the possession of Jaswinder Singh alias Happy and Vijay Kumar Vijay, who were in the car."
In another case, the police seized 600 gm heroin allegedly from the possession of one Massa Singh.
The SSP said, "Two separate cases have been registered against the three accused under sections 15, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. However, further investigation is underway."
