One person was killed and 18 others suffered injuries when a truck hit a bus from the rear on the Ferozepur road (NH-95) near Silver Arc Mall on Saturday morning. The truck pushed the bus for at least 50 meters before coming to a halt.

The injured were rushed to the civil hospital and nine of them were discharged after administering first aid.

Three persons with critical injuries were referred to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, and Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. One person succumbed to his injuries in Patiala hospital.

The deceased was identified as Naresh Paswan of Barnala. The condition of Daler Paswan of Bihar, who is admitted to Rajindra Hospital, and Kewal Yadav, who is admitted to the PGIMER, Chandigarh, is stated to be critical.

The injured, who are admitted to the civil hospital, have been identified as Ranjit Podar, Shiv Kumar, Karan, Krishan, Sonu Nath and Akhilesh Vishwas and a woman, Begma.

The incident took place around 5.45 am when the bus belonging to Dabwali Transport Company was on its way to Barnala. As the bus reached near Silver Arc Mall, a speeding truck hit it from the rear.

Passersby informed the police and initiated the rescue operation. Eyewitnesses said the bus was overloaded. Many of passengers were sitting on the roof and some of them were clinging to doors. When the truck hit the bus, passengers sitting on the roof and clinging on the doors fell on the road and suffered injuries.

Inspector Beant Juneja said the police have arrested the truck driver, who has been identified as Baldev Singh of Jalandhar, after lodging a first information report against him for rash and negligent driving.

The truck was loaded with grocery and was on its way to Gujarat. It is being suspected that the truck driver dozed off and lost control over the vehicle. The police have impounded both the vehicles.
