One person was seriously injured when a group of unidentified miscreants beat up Powercom contract workers in the Gandhi Nagar market in Patiala on Friday evening.
The assault occurred when Powercom workers were shifting electricity meters outside houses in the colony. It was learnt that those present on the spot remained mute spectators as workers were thrashed by the assailants.
The attackers also threatened workers of dire consequences if they returned to the colony to shift more meters.
The seriously injured, identified as Sachin, was referred to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A Powercom Assistant Executive Engineer later lodged an FIR with police that soon after meter installation work was finished, a group of 10 members carrying baseball bats and other sharp-edged weapons attacked the workers.
Police said the attackers were suspected to be colony residents who were annoyed over installation of meters outside their houses.
Police said that workers alleged that attackers also took away their instruments and wire rolls, besides tearing their clothes.
When contacted, a police official Amrik Singh, who is investigating the case, said two of the assailants had been identified as Loveraj and Maam Chand, while others were yet to be identified.
No arrest had been made at the time of filing of the report.
