A pall of gloom descended on this border town on Wednesday as the news of the death of three local residents in the Rajdhani mishap in Bihar spread.

The dead belong to two local families. Five members of these families were injured.

According to sources, Pawan Dhawan (50), chief inspector at the loco unit of the local divisional railway manager’s office; his wife Neelam (47); son Nishant (15); daughter Mauli (10); his childhood friend and colleague Sanjeev Beri (49), inspector, loco unit; his wife Bharti (45); son Ashu (22); and daughter Aashnaa (18) were going to Darjeeling for a holiday.

“On Monday night, the two families boarded the Punjab Mail from Ferozepur and later the Rajdhani Express from New Delhi to reach their destination, but on Tuesday night, the accident took place when the train reached Chhapra in Bihar,” said Rajesh Dhawan, Pawan’s brother.

Pawan, Neelam and Bharti Beri died on the spot, while the five others suffered injuries. Later, the injured were shifted to a hospital in Patna, reports said. The injured Aashnaa was also operated upon.

Meanwhile, friends and relatives reached the Preet Nagar house of Dhawans and Vikas Vihar house of Beris here. The bodies had been brought to Delhi and arrangements were being made to bring them to Ferozepur.
