With the fate of candidates now sealed in the electronic voting machines (EVM) to be revealed on March 11, the district administration has deployed 11 companies of paramilitary troops to guard the EVM machines.

In the 11 assembly constituencies of Amritsar district, the district administration has set up 11 strongrooms under tight vigil.

Apart from the CCTV cameras installed around the strongrooms the administration has also put on job 11 duty magistrates.

Detailing about the arrangements, Amritsar deputy commissioner-cum-district election officer Basant Garg said, “We are taking no chances as far as the security and safety of the EVMs is concerned. Besides deploying 11 companies of paramilitary, we have also arranged fire-fighting equipment at strongrooms in case of any mishap.”

The DC further said that log books have been put at each strongroom and any officer visiting the centre will have to mark his entry with his name and time of visit.

The DC said that candidates too can depute a representative around the strongroom.

Notably, the district administration had set up these strongrooms even before the polling ended on February 4.

As soon as the polling ended, the EVMs were taken to the respective strongrooms under tight security cover.
