The police arrested 13 persons for allegedly transporting 40 cows in four trucks to Mizoram for slaughtering, from Chandigarh road on late Saturday night.
The police have impounded the trucks and sent the cows to the Dairy Complex on Tajpur road, until court orders.
They have also booked a veterinary doctor, Bhajan Singh, for allegedly issuing a fitness certificate of the animals without verifying the facts.
While the Division Number 7 police arrested Sunil Kumar, Prateek of Uttar Pradesh, Parminder Singh, Amarjit Singh of Bhamiya village and Vijay Kumar, Jamalpur police arrested Sukhraj Singh, Partap Singh of Asar village of Patti of Tarn Taran, Tarsem Singh of Chamba Kalan village of Tarn Taran, Jagmanjit Singh of Mirpur village of Nakodar, Jagan, and Ramparveshwar Rai and Manpreet Singh, both of Tajpur road.
Inspector Raj Kumar, SHO, Division Number 7 police station, said the police arrested the accused with the help of members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad.
According to Kumar, when the trucks were intercepted, their occupants could not provide the required documents for transporting the cows. Therefore, leading them to suspect that the cows were being taken to be slaughtered.
