13-year-old drowns in canal during Ganpati immersion

A 13-year-old is feared to have drowned in Bathinda canal during 'Ganpati Visarjan' in Bathinda, on Thursday evening. A team of divers from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is searching for the child, as the body is yet to be recovered.

Thermal police station SHO Harpreet Singh said, "Some children were among the devotees present at the site and diving into the water. One of them, a 13-year-old, identified as Vishal drowned in canal. The police came to know of it after the parents reported that their son was missing. Now, another child , who was with the child claims that while he was saved, but Vishal drowned. Still, we have deployed more than 20 divers in hope of clues for the child."

Hours before the child's slipping, a youth was also saved by the locals, after he fell into the water.

At the Sirhind Canal, a number of devotees who had taken it upon themselves to immerse the idol in the water, were saved by others from slipping into the water.

The district administration failed to take necessary steps to prevent such incidents.

In fact, some young devotees were seen jumping into the canal in the presence of police officials.
