Kotkapura Sadar police have booked eight people for embezzlement of nearly 15,000 wheat bags, worth Rs 1.9 crore, from a Markfed godown on the Faridkot road here, on Friday. Three employees of the agency are among those booked.
It is not clear when the leakage from the store started, but the Markfed district managing committee lodged a police complaint on September 25, after it found 6,000 stocks of bag missing in its physical verification report in September first week.
The matter was brought to the notice of the authorities concerned and three employees - Sukhpreet Singh, Kotkapura Markfed branch incharge; Sadhu Singh and Gurdeep Singh, salesmen with the agency were suspended on September 6.
Five security personnel of a private firm deployed at the godown, including security incharge, former captain Gurjant Singh has been booked.
The eight employees have been booked under Sections 408/420/465/467/468/471 and 120 B of the Indian Penal Code.
Investigating officer Devinder Singh, SHO, Sadar Kotkapura, said that investigations had been ordered into the incident.
Markfed district manager Vinod Kumar said that a police probe had been launched and the agency was determined to get to the bottom of the matter.
