Friday proved to be a day of lucky escape for Patiala residents as fire at two locations was reported, but there were no injuries or deaths.
In the first incident reported at a three-storey building at the Sheran Wala Gate area around 4pm, 15 students and some teachers were trapped, but were rescued by firefighters after more than 30 minutes.
The students had been trapped at the third floor and were taking an English language class.
Shopkeepers in the area saw smoke bellowing out from the building and informed the firebrigade.
The firemen broke open shutters to window panes at the third floor to enter the premises and rescue the children.
Sources said the fire started after the garbage dumped in the hollow space in the building, left for the provision of installation of an elevator, was set ablaze, possibly due to the throwing of a stray match by a careless smoker.
In another fire, the office of a local transport company caught fire and vegetables were gutted. No loss of life has been reported in the two incidents.
