15-year-old girl jumps into canal, drowns

Allegedly upset over comments passed by her neighbours, a 15-year-old girl ended her life by jumping into the Bhakhra mainline canal.

Though the girl took the extreme step on the March 18, the police recovered her body on March 22 near Nirwana in Haryana.The deceased has been identified as Jyoti. The police have registered a case under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC against Bachitar Singh and Ramla Devi, both residents of Momian village near Shutrana in Patiala district.

Investigating officer Gurdev Singh said according to the statement of the deceased father, the accused used to mentally harass her unnecessarily and pass comments over her character for no reasons which made her daughter to take such extreme step.

The police have started investigation and a manhunt has been launched to arrest the suspects, who have absconded.
