Due to continuous landslides, a 150 metre (about 500 feet) stretch of the road between Giripool and Chhaila, near Panyali in the Rajgarh subdivision, collapsed on Friday. According to reports, a 50 metre stretch also caved in.
The district administration has decided to get the expert opinion of geologists to ascertain the cause of the landslides.
Subdivisional magistrate Satish Chaudhary and executive engineer Ajay Sharma inspected the site. “The landslides have been occurring since Monday, and a big stretch of the road collapsed on Friday”, they said.
“The PWD is assessing the losses and it can take several weeks to restore the road to traffic,” said a source. According to villagers, 14 panchayats of the subdivision depend on the road, which connects three districts including Sirmour, Solan and Shimla with each other, for transportation of essential commodities.
“The supply of essential items will be ensured in the areas affected by the landslides,” said deputy commissioner Vikas Labroo, adding the advice of geologists would be taken before undertaking further measures.
