Sixteen school children were injured on Saturday afternoon when their bus overturned on the Baagwanpur-Kamrawa link road in Bholath of Kapurthala district.

Reports suggested that the bus driver lost control on the vehicle as it was running on a high speed.
Most of the students were admitted to nearby hospitals while six who sustained serious injuries were shifted to the civil hospital in Jalandhar and other private hospitals.

According to information available, the bus of Ajanta Model Senior Secondary School, Bholath, was carrying around 25 students to drop home at nearby villages.

When the bus reached near Baagwanpur-Kamrawa village link road around 2 pm, the driver has lost control over the vehicle as a result of which it overturned in the fields nearby.

Villagers and passerby rescued the children and the bus driver. The driver, Visakha Singh, fled from the spot.

Sukhjinder Singh, father of Harpreet Kaur (8) who was injured, said, "We had already requested the school authorities to change the driver as he drives rashly. A similar accident took place 10 days ago when the bus slipped into fields, but children escaped without any injury luckily."

Raman Arora, the school owner, said, "I am sad over the accident. Action will be taken against the erring driver."

Senior superintendent of police Dhanpreet Kaur said, "A case under various sections of the IPC has been registered against the driver as the accident took place due to his negligence."
