A 16-year-old girl was allegedly set on fire by pouring kerosene at her home by three men in the Focal Point area on Thursday. The men took the step as the girl, a student of class 12, had companied against him and accused them of kidnapping, molestation and attempt to rape on October 29.
The accused have been identified as Shehzad Anwar, Babbu and Vicky and the Focal Point police have registered a case of attempt to murder against them.
The accused also held captive the girl’s mother who was trying to save her. Soon after the incident the accused fled the spot. The girl was rushed to a private hospital, which referred her to the civil hospital, where her condition is stated to be critical. She has received over 60% burn injuries.
The victim’s mother alleged that had the police arrested the accused earlier, they would have not gathered the courage to burn her daughter.
The victim’s mother alleged that Shehzad, Babbu and Vicky had kidnapped her daughter on October 25 and locked her in a room at some unidentified place. After three days, they released her. On October 29, she lodged a complaint against the accused at the Sahnewal police station alleging kidnapping, molestation and attempt to rape. But the police did not arrest.
On October 31, the aides of the accused had trespassed in the victim’s house and thrashed her for lodging an FIR against the trio. They allegedly pressurised the victim to take back her complaint. The accused also threatened them of dire consequences.
A separate case was registered in this regard.
After this incident, the Sahnewal Police had swung into action and had arrested Shehzad and Babbu, who were released on bail on November 20.
The mother further said the accused barged into their house on Thursday and started assaulting them. The accused held them captive and set her daughter on fire after pouring kerosene on her.
Assistant commissioner of police (south) Rupinder Kaur said, “A case of attempt to murder has been registered against the accused in this context. The police have made separate teams to arrest of the accused.”
