Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) awarded 164 exporters of northern states during a function here on Friday night. Of these five were from Jalandhar.

Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was the chief guest at the Northern Region Award Function organised by EEPC, the nodal agency under the commerce and industries ministry of the government of India. Revenue and rehabilitation minister Bikram Singh Majithia was the guest of honour at the function.

The awards were given for 2009-10 and 2010-11. Northern region is an important hub of the engineering industry and accounted for 26% ($15.6 million) of India's total exports of engineering goods and services during 2010-11.

Some of the companies which were awarded are Maruti Suzuki Limited, Hero Motocorp Ltd, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, Steel Authority of India Ltd, MMTC, RITES Ltd and PEC Ltd.
Sukhbir appreciated EEPC's award criteria which he said were based on a competitive selection process and strict adherence to guidelines.

The function was attended by more than 400 representatives from large, medium and small scale sector enterprises and the who's who of the industry.

"In 2010-11 our exports bounced back to $49.8 billion, 50% over the corresponding figure in 2009-10," EEPC chairman Aman Chadha said. "The revival continued in 2011-12 as engineering exports grew further to touch $60 billion."
