They alleged that Harjit was kept in illegal detention by police for almost two days and was tortured inhumanly, and thus "upset Harjit ended his life" by hanging himself from a tree.
Notably, Harjit and one more person were picked by the Tarn Taran police after an Akali councillor filed a complaint of theft at his house.
Harpal Singh, father of the victim, said, "Harjit was picked by police on wrong charges and later beaten up mercilessly. Humiliated by police action, Harjit committed suicide."
"We want justice for Harjit, the culprits should face action," demanded Harpal.The protesters also raised slogans against the Punjab police.
The victim's family alleged that "he was suffering from depression due to torture and thus committed suicide".
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP-South) Balkrishan Singla, who reached the spot to pacify the protesting family, said: "We are waiting for the post-mortem report. We have assured the family that action will be taken if anything wrong is found in that. We are also verifying the allegations levelled by the family of the victim."No FIR in the incident was registered.
