A contest between two buses to board more passengers claimed the life of a BCom Student at Ferozepur Road, near MBD Neopolis Mall, on Thursday morning.
One of the bus drivers run over the student and fled from the spot along with the vehicle.
The student, who died on the spot, has been identified as 19-year-old Harjyot Singh Dua of the Model town area. He was a BCom (first year) student at Sri Aurobindo College of Commerce and Management, Jhande.
The Sarabha Nagar police have registered a case against an unidentified bus driver for causing death due to negligence.
Eyewitnesses said the driver was driving the bus recklessly and was trying to overtake another bus plying on the same route.
Harjyot was on his way to the college on his Yamaha R-15 motorcycle around 10 am. When he reached in front of the MBD Neopolis Mall, a bus trying to overtake another bus hit him. As a result, his motorcycle rammed into another bus plying on the road and he fell on the road. Meanwhile, the bus that hit him run him over.
Passersby commuting on the road tried to nab the driver but he managed to flee the spot along with the vehicle.
People alleged that the police took nearly 40 minutes to reach the spot, while they had informed the police control room immediately after the mishap took place.
SHO of the Sarabha Nagar police station Mandeep Singh said a case had been registered in this context and the police had launched a manhunt to identify and arrest the driver.
Harjyot is survived by father, mother and a brother.
