The district (rural) police arrested four people under the NDPS Act on Friday late night, with the seizure of 2,000-kg poppy husk from a canter truck.
Acting on a tip off, a special team headed by Kartarpur SHO Inderjit Singh was constituted. The team signaled an Innova car to stop near Kapurthala railway station on Friday. However, the car did not stop, but was chased down, SSP Yurinder Singh Hayer said. Hayer added that a canter truck and an Indica were following the Innova.
The canter was searched and 55 bags containing 2,000-kg of poppy husk were recovered, the SSP said, adding that the contraband was hidden under bags of onion.
The four occupants of the three vehicles, Gurdeep Singh, Kulwant Singh, Baljinder Singh and Karnail Singh, were arrested under the NDPS Act and the vehicles were impounded.
Preliminary interrogation has revealed that the contraband was being brought from Ratlam district in Madhya Pradesh. One of the accused, Gurdeep, was a proclaimed offender and six cases under the NDPS Act were pending against him in Jalandhar, Kapurthala and Ludhiana, the SSP said. Another accused Karnail Singh is facing three cases.
Hayer added that on May 9, in a similar decision, poppy husk in huge quantity was seized and claimed that the person supposed to have got the supply, one Sukha, had been arrested.
