2 debt-ridden farmers from Mansa commit suicide

Two debt-ridden farmers reportedly committed suicide in a span of 24 hours in the district. The distressed farmers who killed themselves have been identified as Baljeet Singh of Uddat Bhagat Ram village and Beant Singh (45) of Ranghreal village.

Two debt-ridden farmers reportedly committed suicide in a span of 24 hours in the district. The distressed farmers who killed themselves have been identified as Baljeet Singh of Uddat Bhagat Ram village and Beant Singh (45) of Ranghreal village.

Beant Singh (45) ended his life after consuming sulphas tablets on Thursday. The victim reportedly owned around 3 acres of land and was reeling under a debt of Rs 5 lakh. Beant had faced monetary loss after damage to the cotton crop. His neighbour found him lying unconscious in the field after which he was rushed to the Budhlada civil hospital but died midway. An FIR under Section 174 (inquest proceedings) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) has been lodged at the Bareta police station.

28-year-old Baljeet Singh ended his life after consuming poisonous substance on Wednesday. He owned around 1.5 acres and was reeling under a debt of Rs 10 lakh.

He reportedly spent a huge amount for treatment of his nine-year-old son, suffering from paralysis. His kin said with no improvement in his son’s condition, Baljeet remained stressed which forced him to take the step.

An FIR under Section 174 (inquest proceedings) of the CrPC has been lodged at Kotdharmu police station.
