The Crime Investigating Agency (CIA) wing of SAS Nagar Police arrested two contract criminals from a barricade in Kharar and claimed to have finally busted a gang that operated even from jails.

The accused have been identified as Pargat Singh Uttala (23) from Bathinda and Gurvinder Singh, alias Raju (30), a resident of Kharar.

Two members of the gang — Gurpreet Singh (30), a Class-9 dropout, and Gurpreet Singh alias Pardesi (26), a matriculate resident of Kurali — are already in judicial custody.

The police have recovered three .315 bore pistols, a .32 bore revolver, one .32 bore countrymade pistol and cartridges from their possession.

“Gangsters used to hire Pargat and Gurvinder to carry out specific instances of loot, murder and robberies on contract,” said SAS Nagar SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, on Tuesday.

The SSP added, “Pargat Singh, a graduate, is the master-mind of the gang. He works on directions issued by gangsters lodged in different jails. They were planning a major loot in SAS Nagar, but were arrested before their plan could be put into action.”

Pargat’s boarding and lodging and offering him a safe shelter was being taken care of by Gurpreet Singh, Gurvinder Singh, alias Raju, and Gurpreet Singh, alias Pardesi.

Gurvinder, a Class-8 dropout, was on parole after he has been awarded life-term for a murder in Kharar and was responsible for arranging weapons for gang members.

With the arrest of three people, the Kharar Police claim to have solved 25 cases of vehicle theft. The arrested accused have been identified as Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Khanpur, Gurwant Singh, alias Happy, a resident of Kharar and Ramandeep Singh from Kurali.

SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar told a press conference, “More than 25 cases of vehicle theft have been solved with the arrest. The accused used to sell stolen vehicles on fake documents. How the accused arranged fake documents is under investigation.”

The SSP added that the gang was operating in Kharar and SAS Nagar. “They used to target areas that see heavy rush, especially in parking areas around the shopping complexes. They conducted a recce of the area and used a master-key.”
