Two men were killed in a shootout at Jamalpur area here on Saturday morning. The deceased were accused in an attempt-to-murder case in the Machhiwara area a month and a half ago.

The incident took place when Gurjeet Singh, husband of a sarpanch of Machhiwara area, whom the police had taken along to identify the accused, allegedly shot them with his revolver after they allegedly attacked the police team.

The deceased have been identified as Harinder Singh (23) and Jatinder Singh (25), residents of Bhoapur village near Machhiwara, who were living as paying guests at a house in Jamalpur.

Surprisingly, the Khanna police that came to Ludhiana for the operation had not informed the local police station.

The police booked Gurjeet and three head constables under Section 302 of the IPC.

Protests erupted in front of Jamalpur police station in the evening as the family of those killed demanded a probe into the "fake encounter".

Satpal Singh, father of the two who were killed, said a high-level inquiry should be initiated into the incident.

The Machhiwara SHO has been sent to police lines, Khanna, for dereliction of duty.
