Dense fog coupled with poor visibility hit rail services, delaying about 20 Ludhiana-bound trains on Sunday. The long wait for trains left passengers stranded on the platforms.
Most of the UP-bound trains coming via Delhi were running behind schedule. Some trains that reached the Ludhiana railway station were by up to 10 to 20 hours. According to railway officials, the situation could persist if the fog continued in the region.
Jan-Nayak Express made passengers wait for 23 hours, followed by Shaheed Express which was running 19 hours behind its schedule. While Amarpali Express was running late by 12 hours, Dadar Express by three hours, Malwa express by seven hours, Janseva express by eight hours. The Delhi-Pathankot train was delayed by two hours, Delux train and Sachkhand Express by three hours each.
Even the New Delhi-bound Shatabdi Express reached the city late by two hours.
The platforms of Ludhiana railway station seemed packed to its capacity with passengers waiting out in the cold for their delayed trains.
Amrit Raj, a passenger, said it was really difficult to wait for the train for so long in the biting cold weather.
Ludhiana station superintendent RK Sharma said, “The situation can remain same if fog continues to envelope the region in the days to come. We are making announcements about the status of trains so that the passengers do not suffer. Passengers should also check the running status of train before coming to station, to avoid any problem.”
