The court of Muktsar additional district and sessions judge, Varinder Agarwal, on Monday sentenced 20-year jail term to three accused -- Gurlal Singh, Balpreet Singh and Manpreet Singh – involved in gang rape of 14-year-old girl from Gandhar village in the district.

“The accused have been sentenced 20 years of imprisonment under section 376 (D) of IPC (gang rape). Besides, the court has also ordered a fine of Rs 80,000 to each accused, which would be given as compensation to the victim. The court has also convicted accused Gurlal, Balpreet and Manpreet, all residents of Gandhar village, for eight years for abduction of the girl under section 366 (A),” said Narinder Kumar Jeet, advocate appearing on behalf of the victim.

All the jail terms run concurrently.

“In case of the nonpayment of fine, they would have to spend four more years in jail,” added NK Jeet.

The victim was gang raped by the accused when she was returning from school. Though the police had arrested two accused after the incident, the third one was arrested after about four months, following protests from Kisan Majdoor Unions.

The Muktsar police had registered a case against the accused on January 25, 2014.

The victim belonged to economically backwards community while the accused were from the general community of Gandhar village.
