In a tragic incident, a 20-year-old student of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room at the university on Friday night.

The deceased was identified as Ramanpreet Kaur, a student of BA-II, belonging to Rayya town. She was residing in hostel number 2 of the university.

On getting news of the incident, the university authorities rushed Ramanpreet to the Guru Nanak Dev Hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Police said no suicide note was found on the spot and further the investigation was on. They have also informed the family of the deceased and once they share more about the girl, the reason for suicide could be ascertained, said the police.

Meanwhile, Ramanpreet’s two roommates had gone home on the day of the incident. She locked herself inside and took the extreme step, said registrar of the university, Karanjeet Singh Kahlon.

He added, “The reason for the incident is being investigated by the police. But the university left no stone unturned to save the girl the moment one of her friends informed the warden and security guard on duty.”

Detailing further, the registrar said Ramanpreet’s classmate who resided in the same hostel received a call from Ramanpreet’s family to check why she (Ramanpreet) was not answering their calls. On getting no response after repeatedly knocking on Ramanpreet’s door, the guards jumped into the balcony from the back door and broke the window to enter the room.

The incident left everyone stunned as the girl at that time was quite critical. The university medical officer saw her condition and rushed her to the hospital. The local guardians also reached the hospital at the night hour, said Kahlon.

Police officials also shared that as no suicide note was found, it is tough to ascertain the reason of suicide but it has been learnt that she was under depression. Parents can further help in the investigation.
