A local court on Wednesday awarded 20-year imprisonment to a youth for giving shelter to his minor friend who raped a 21-year old girl.
Additional district and sessions judge Harveen Bhardwaj sentenced accused Manpreet Singh (22), a resident of Sham Churasi village in Hoshiarpur district, to jail for 20 years under 376 (D) (involving rape of a woman by one or more persons or acting in furtherance of a common intention, each of whom shall be deemed to have committed the offence of rape), 20 years under section 120B (criminal conspiracy) and seven years under section 506 (criminal intimidation) of IPC. All the three sentences will run concurrently.
Deputy district attorney Harnek Singh, who fought the case on behalf of prosecution, said that Manpreet might not have raped the girl but he, along with a minor friend, gave shelter to the minor accused who raped the girl.
He said that at the time of offence, Manpreet was guarding outside the place where the crime was being committed and he even accompanied the accused when he brought the girl to that place to rape her. The two minor accused are still facing trial in this case in a juvenile court.
As per the FIR registered against the three accused, the victim claimed that she was going to her uncle's house in Navipur Alwalpur village in Adampur on February 26, 2013.
She alleged that three boys of her village came on two bikes and told her that the condition of her ailing mother had worsened and asked her to sit on one of their bikes so that they could drop her home.
She alleged that the accused took her to an abandoned place where one of the minor boys raped her while the two others stood outside to keep a vigil. Then the accused took her to a house where the same minor boy repeatedly raped her. She managed to flee in the night when the accused was sleeping.
She alleged that the three accused, including Manpreet, warned her of dire consequences if she revealed anything.
The two minor accused were arrested on the next day of crime after a case was registered against them and Manpreet was arrested on March 18, 2013.
