In contrast to the image of Himachal Pradesh, women are not as safe as it appears. A total of 227 rape cases were reported in the state till November 30 this year, highest in the decade. In 2012, the number of rape cases reported from across the state was 183.
The highest rape cases (31) were reported from Kangra district this year, followed by Shimla with 29 cases, Mandi 27 cases and Una and Kullu with 25 cases each.
Una topped in the cases with regard to cruelty against women with 52 cases, followed by Kangra 46, Mandi 34, Bilaspur 31, Kullu 29, Shimla 24, Sirmaur 22, Hamirpur 21, Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh 20, Solan 13, Chamba 4 and Kinnaur 4.
The cases of molestation too have gone up considerably with 458 such cases reported in 2013 against 248 cases reported last year. District-wise, Kangra topped the list with 96 molestation cases, Mandi 65, Shimla 58, Kullu 41 and Sirmaur 39, Una 35 and 28 cases each from Bilaspur, Chamba and Hamirpur.
Tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti was found to be safest for women as no case of rape, cruelty or molestation was reported there. On the brighter side, there was no incident of dowry death reported from across the state. Murder cases came down from 30 in 2012 to 26 in 2013, while those of abetment to suicide stood at 80 as compared to 84 the previous year.
In all, 1,476 cases related to crimes against women were reported till November this year, the highest in the past decade. Last year, the total number of crimes against women was 1,024. There were 273 abductions and 97 cases were those of harassment in 2013 as compared to 152 abduction and 63 harassment cases in 2012.
