21 cases settled in Lok Adalat

A total of 33 cases were taken up in the monthly Lok Adalat held here on Tuesday, out of which 21 cases were settled and an amount of more than `2.21 billion was awarded as compensation.

Two benches have been constituted for holding the monthly Lok Adalat at the judicial courts complex here. Girish, secretary, district legal services authority, Amritsar, said that earlier the monthly Lok Adalats were being held on the last Saturday of every month.

"However, the fourth Saturday of each month has been declared a holiday in the subordinate courts in the state by the Punjab and Haryana high court and accordingly, the monthly Lok Adalats shall now be held on the third or last Saturday of each month," said the DLSA secretary.

"By virtue of amicable settlement, the court fee to the tune of `5 crores has been refunded.

It is a land mark achievement of the district legal service authority, Amritsar," Girish said, adding that the Lok Adalat provides speedy disposal of cases and in case, a matter is settled in Lok Adalat, the entire court fee paid by the party is refunded.
