The police arrested four smugglers, having links with drug suppliers in Pakistan, here on Friday and recovered 22 kg of heroin, valued at `110 crore in the international market, one pistol along with six live cartridges and `10 lakh in cash from their possession.

The contraband, seized by the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) of the police, is the third consignment received by the accused in the past one month.

Those arrested have been identified as Jagjit Singh alias Laddi, a resident of Pathankot, Davinder Singh alias Goldy, a resident of Gurdaspur, Kuldip Singh alias Babbu, a resident of Sarai Amanat Khan, and Harbinder Singh, a resident of Gurdaspur.

The accused were arrested from Fatehgarh Churian road where they were waiting in a car to deliver the consignment to one of their contacts.

SSOC Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Manmohan Singh said that acting on a tip-off, a specially constituted police party nabbed the accused on Fatehgarh Churian Road. "Twenty two kg of heroin, one 30-bore pistol along with six live cartridges and `10 lakh of genuine Indian currency were recovered from the accused. A case under sections 21/25/29/61/85 of the NDPS Act and sections 25/54/59 of the Arms Act has been registered against them", he said.

The AIG said that accused Kuldip Singh and Jagjit Singh are notorious smugglers with numerous cases registered against them in various police stations. "The antecedents of the other two are being verified", he added.

He said the investigation so far has revealed that the accused have been indulging in cross-border smuggling and had recently procured two consignments of heroin from Pakistan, which they had disposed off as per the directions from Pakistani smugglers. "The seized consignment is the third received by them in the past one month and the recovered pistol was part of the same", he said.

The preliminary interrogation of the accused, he said, has revealed that they have been using some grey areas in Gurdaspur sector to receive the consignments of heroin. "These grey areas and the entire network on both sides of the border fencing is being identified and tracked. The exact locations used by them for smuggling of the consignments are being zeroed on", he said.

The AIG further said that investigations are being conducted on to unearth the complete nexus and network of this gang. "More arrests are likely to follow soon," he added.
