A 22-year-old Gurdaspur woman was allegedly raped by one of her cousins near Naushera Mahja Singh village under Sekhwan police station on Tuesday night.

The accused then threw her out of their car in front of the government industrial training institute (ITI) building, Gurdaspur, on the Gurdaspur-Pathankot road.

Sources said the woman had gone to the Amritsar jail to meet her brother, an undertrial. When she had left the jail premises, Ganesh Kumar, an Amritsar resident and her cousin, allegedly chased her and offered to drop her at Gurdaspur, claiming that he and his two friends were going to Pathankot.

The woman accepted the offer and sat in their car. Later, she was allegedly raped by Ganesh and dumped outside the ITI in a naked state.

She was spotted by area resident Ram Lal, who took her to his house, where his wife gave her clothes. Ram Lal later informed the police, who took the unconscious woman to a Gurdaspur hospital.

The victim’s brother is facing trial for the rape of Ganesh’s sister.

When contacted, Batala senior superintendent of police (SSP) Inderbir Singh said a police team by a woman officer was sent to the hospital to record the victim’s statement. Subsequently, a case under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at Sekhwan police station against Ganesh and his two friends, Kashmiri Lal and Roop Lal, all resident of Indira Colony, Amritsar.

A medical examination was yet to be conducted on the woman as her condition was still not stable.About six police teams were despatched to various places to nab the accused, the SSP added.
