A 22-year-old youth was crushed to death, while his cousin was injured in an accident near Patiala-Sirhind bypass, here on Wednesday.
The deceased, Gurpeet Singh, who was a resident of a village near Sunam, had come to Punjabi University on his motorcycle to apply for admission in a MA course and was accompanied by his cousin Hardeep Singh (23).
As they were returning home after submitting the documents, a speeding truck hit them from behind while negotiating a turn towards Sangrur road on Patiala-Sirhind bypass.
Gurpreet died on the spot, while his cousin sustained injuries and was under medical supervision in a local hospital.
Punit Singh, station house officer, Urban Estate police station, said the accident took place when both the truck driver and the deceased took a turn towards Sangrur road at the same time. He said the body of Gurpeet Singh was shifted to mortuary, while his cousin was shifted to a local hospital and was out of danger.
Meanwhile, the truck driver, Ranjit Singh, who hails from Yamunanagar, managed to escape. However, the police have taken the truck into custody and have registered an FIR against him under Sections 279 (rash driver), 304-A (causing death by negligence), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427.
