A total of 585 unauthorised constructions in Jawahar Nagar Camp area were reportedly demolished by the Ludhiana municipal corporation (MC) during their three-day anti-encroachment drive which concluded on Thursday.
During the drive, a battery of the MC as well as police officials was pressed into the duty so that the demolition drive could be carried out peacefully and without any obstruction. The MC was able to bring down a total of 225 illegal structures on Thursday with the help of five JCB machines.
This was one of the biggest campaigns launched by the MC against the unauthorised constructions in Jawahar Nagar Camp area. "We had backing of 200 police officials, including 60 women, who helped us to carry out the drive against illegal constructions," said assistant town planner (ATP) Rajinder Sharma.
He said the drive was one of the longest and biggest in the past few years, during which a large number of encroachments were cleared.
The MC's demolition drive came in the wake of the Punjab and Harayana High court asking the corporation to remove all illegal structures from the area.
Sharma said another drive would be carried out on March 5 and 6, during which the remaining encroachments would be removed. "We would take a round of the area on March 5 and 6 and remove all the remaining encroachments," said Sharma.
Over years, a large number of unathorised houses cropped up on the government land in Jawahar Nagar Camp area, which was brought into the notice of the high court that ordered razing of the illegal constructions.
Following the HC order, MC commissioner RK Verma directed the officials to raze the unauthorised constructions.
