Heroin seizure adds to
overdose of smuggling

Another train from Pakistan has brought drugs into India, but first time, a suspect has also been caught.

The directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) on Saturday seized 23-kg heroin worth Rs 115 crore hidden in the cement consignment aboard a goods train from across and arrested Amritsar rail cargo porter Puran Singh in this connection.

Based on specific input, the DRI watched the train since Friday evening, and, later, when it was parked at the Amritsar rail cargo terminal, seized the 23 packets of the drug from bogey 66925. The search was in the night between Friday and Saturday.
The DRI is yet to talk about the details of Puran's role officially but inside sources say the porter had been under surveillance before his arrest in the area where the train was parked early in the day. "We had a specific input about this consignment," said an official of the DRI. "We just took help from customs."

Pakistani goods train has become a regular medium of smuggling. Customs seized 105-kg heroin and ammunition from it the last time, besides earlier shipments of heroin. This is the first time the DRI has caught a suspect, so it's hopeful of a breakthrough in understanding and busing this network.

Since Pakistan exports a huge quantity of cement to India, it's an easy way of slipping drugs and ammunition past customs. The Pakistani customs has made statements that it keeps a close eye on it when cement is loaded in Lahore, yet seizures haven't stopped.
