As many as 23 students and two teachers were injured when a school bus coming from Amritsar Road overturned near Abdal village here on Monday.
The bus belonging to a private school, carrying 23 students and two teachers, was on its way to school, when in a bid to save a motorcyclist, the driver lost control over the vehicle and the bus fell into a ditch and overturned.
The bus belonged to Shri Guru Harkrishan School, Abdal, and was ferrying students from Kathunangal, Wariam, Sehneywali, Alkarey, Chandey and Chavinda Devi villages to the school on Monday morning.
Talking to reporters, an eyewitness said the motorcyclist, who had two bags of fodder loaded on to the motorcycle, suddenly overtook the bus, and in a bid to save the motorcyclist, the driver lost the balance. Seeing the overturning bus, the motorcyclist fled the spot, he added.
All the students on board suffered minor injuries, but the condition of 10 students was serious and they were rushed to a hospital in Amritsar. They were later identified as Malkit, Gurkirat, Harmanjeet, Harmanpreet, Rabkirat, Simratpal, Gurleen, Simarjeet, Navjot and Navjeevan.
After the matter was reported to the police, a team of officials under the Kathunangal SHO reached the spot. The police have registered a case.
