As many as 24 persons were injured in a head-on collision between two Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) buses near the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education building, here on Tuesday morning.

Police said the incident took place around 8:30am when a speeding Hoshiarpur-bound HRTC bus first hit a taxi and then rammed into another bus coming from Pathankot, as the former's driver, Pradeep Kumar, failed to negotiate a sharp turn. The accident led to an hour-long traffic jam. The injured, including the two drivers, were discharged after first-aid at the Zonal Hospital.

One of the injured passengers, Balbir Singh, 42, said Kumar was driving the bus rashly despite requests from the passengers to slow down. "Ultimately, he first hit a taxi, lost control and then rammed into the bus coming from the opposite side," Singh added.

"A case of rash and negligent driving has been registered against one of the drivers, Pradeep Kumar," said district police spokesperson and additional superintendent of police (ASP) Shiv Kumar, adding that further investigation was on.
