With dense fog engulfing the area, 27 persons were injured in the pile-up which took place on the Doraha-Ludhiana road on Wednesday morning.
A truck collided with another truck which was parked outside Gurdwara Attarsar Sahib. The truck was parked due to low visibility.
Following this collision, a lorry carrying eight labourers rammed into the truck from behind. All of the labourers were injured and one was seriously injured.
A private bus followed by a tanker transporting some chemical rammed into the pile-up. Later, a series of vehicles rammed into the pile-up, which led to a traffic jam on the highway. A total of 16 vehicles were involved in the pile-up.
The traffic police closed the movement of vehicles on the road near the accident site.
An eyewitness, Ranjit Singh, said such an accident was never witnessed by the residents of the area. "More than 15 vehicles piled-up and several people were injured. The accident took place because of dense fog in the area," he added.
He added that a number of ambulances came to the spot and took the injured to Ludhiana and local hospital.
Sources said nearly six ambulances from the area near Doraha, Ludhiana and Khanna rushed to the spot.
A traffic police official who was present on the spot said fog was the reason behind the accident. He added that four persons were seriously injured.
The injured include Sadir (40), Noor Mohammad (45), Dilshad (8) and Shehnaz (36) who were admitted to the civil hospital.
Meanwhile, another accident took place at Sarih village on Alamgir Sahib road. A bus ferrying women was hit by a speeding mini-truck, which injured three of them. All injured were rushed to the civil hospital.
