A 27-year-old married man was allegedly murdered with a sharp-edged weapon by some unidentified people at Smadh Bhai village under Baghapurana subdivision, 30 kilometres from the district headquarters here on Monday.

Police officials said that the deceased has been identified as Gurjan Singh of Smadh Bhai. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Jatinder Singh Khaira, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Gurmeet Singh, DSP (investigation), Balwinder Singh, DSP of Baghapurana subdivision, and several other police officials reached the spot and recorded the statements of family members of the deceased and some local residents.

According to the family, Gurjant Singh had been running a furniture shop at Jalal village under Phul subdivision in Bathinda district for the past few years. The deceased's mother Mohinder Kaur told the police that her son came home from Jalal on Sunday for collecting a few urgent documents, he received an unknown phone call. "As soon as Gurjant
Singh received this call, he left home immediately, but after that he did not return home," she said.

Gurjant Singh's wife Sukhpal Kaur, who has been also working at a spinning mill at Jeeda village in Bathinda district, returned home around midnight after finishing her duty shift. Police officials said that she also rang on her husband's mobile phone several times but did not get any response.

The deceased's father Jeet Singh told the police that, after searching his son everywhere, while he was going to a local gurdwara with his wife Mohinder Kaur in the morning, they saw the body of his son near his house.

DSP Balwinder Singh said, "As soon as we received information, we reached the spot and recorded the statements of local residents. We recovered the body and brought it to Dr Mathura Dass Pahwa civil hospital, Moga, for post-mortem.
After autopsy, the body was handed over to the family members. We are waiting for the autopsy report so far."

A case has been registered against unidentified people under Section 302 (murder of Indian Penal Code at Baghapurana police station behalf of the statement of the deceased's Jeet Singh.

The DSP said, "The body bore injury markes caused with a sharp-edged weapon. Further investigation is underway at the moment."
