A day after Pankaj Sapra, son of the owner of Hotel Friends Regency, was booked for abetment to suicide of 27-year-old Ridhima Mahajan, her father has alleged that his daughter was murdered by Sapra and she did not commit suicide as made out by police.
Ridhima’s family has also alleged that Sapra forced her to write the suicide note that was later recovered from an almirah.
The Symbiosis MBA was found dead in her room by her father’s friend on September 9 when her family members were away in Rajasthan. Police said she had consumed celphos tablets.
Nine-year relationship with Pankaj Sapra
The FIR states that Ridhima had a nine-year-old relationship with the accused Pankaj Sapra, and allegedly consumed the celphos tablets because she was upset over constantly being harassed by Sapra.
According to father Anil Mahajan’s statement, Ridhima had an affair with Sham Lal Sapra’s son Pankaj, residents of Sarabha Nagar. Both the families were mulling marriage, but Sham Lal was against the union.
He further stated that he then got his daughter engaged to a Ludhiana resident three years ago. When Pankaj got wind of this, he visited their house with his mother and sister and assured them that he will try to convince Sham Lal. Ridhima’s engagement was called off as a result.
However, Sham Lal wouldn’t budge from his stand. He told Mahajan that he belonged to the higher strata of society and that they had no status in front of them, Mahajan stated in his complaint.
Shocked, Mahajan again got his daughter engaged to a Jalandhar resident. Pankaj called that boy’s parents and told them of his long relationship with Ridhima. That engagement was called off as well.
Mahajan has stated, “Neither did he marry my daughter nor did he let her marry anywhere else.”
CCTV footage tells another story
The family left for Rajasthan on September 7 leaving Ridhima alone at home. After getting no response from Ridhima because her phone was switched off, her father sent his friend to check on her. When he broke open the door, he saw Ridhima lying dead inside her room.
Mahajan said, “We checked the CCTV footage and found that Pankaj and his friend had entered the house at 10.19 pm and exited at 11.30pm on the intervening night of September 8 and 9. One of his friends was also spotted scaling the wall of our house in the footage. I am sure Pankaj gave the celphos tablets to my daughter as she could not have committed suicide.”
Inspector Jagdeep Singh, who is investigating the case, said, they have only booked Pankaj and efforts were on to arrest him.
“We will examine the role of the remaining family members accordingly,”he said.
