The municipal corporation of Ludhiana has failed to give salaries to teachers of schools within its limits. Since Diwali is around the corner, the wait of teachers is stretching too long.

Despite the fact that 28 teachers of seven MC schools were without salary for the past two months, the corporation had not taken any measures to provide relief to these teachers. Salaries which are to be disbursed to these teachers come from the local bodies department, Chandigarh.

The civic body takes care of seven of total 13 government schools in the municipal limits. There are 29 posts in these seven schools of which 28 are filled at present.

All teachers have not received their salaries due to unknown reasons.

A schoolteacher said salary was not given to them for the past two months. "Diwali is around the corner and it has become difficult for me to manage things at our homes. This is the time of year when we buy new things for our homes and gifts for children," the teacher added.

The teacher further said not giving salaries for the past two months was an injustice to them. "If they cannot pay us why do they not tell us directly."

An official of the MC who deals with salaries said these teachers were paid through cheque which need to be signed by the higher authorities.

"When the cheques will be signed they will be given to the teachers. There is a delay in paying salaries of these teachers," the official added.

Interestingly, the transfer of teachers in these schools is done directly by the local government department and not by the local MC.

MC commissioner RK Verma said he was not aware of the issue and would look into the matter.
