The District Child Protection Committee (DCPC) shut down three children homes at Chaichowk, Pandoh and Karsog areas of the district on Sunday. The action came following the Himachal Pradesh high court orders that these three children homes should either fulfil formalities for registration under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act or close down.
The court had passed the orders after sexual harassment incidents in children homes at few places in the state in the past and asked the government to monitor children homes for safety of inmates.
DCPC in-charge, DC Thakur confirmed closure of three children homes as they failed to fulfil the registration criteria. Children staying in the homes have been sent to their parents or guardians as they refused to go to other children homes.
Women and child development department programme officer Jaypal Mohan said notices have been issued to the children homes running without proper registration and the DCPC has been asked to monitor registered children homes on regular interval to ensure safety and development of children staying in these homes.
