The district police have arrested three officials of the modern jail here, including Surjeet Singh, a warrant officer, Virpal and Adarsh Kumar, both warders, for allegedly supplying drugs to jail inmates in connivance with others. They were sent in one-day police remand by the court of the chief judicial magistrate here.

The police had arrested Rakesh Kumar alias Sonu, a resident of Faridkot, with 100 grams of heroin in June. He had disclosed the modus operandi of the supply of drugs inside the jail.

"Sonu was allegedly running a tea stall out of the jail and received the supply of drugs from drug suppliers as per the demand of the inmates through various contacts. He allegedly also helped send the drugs inside the jail through a vehicle used to transport vegetables inside the jail," sources claimed.

After Sonu's arrest, the police had booked 12 people, including seven jail inmates, for allegedly
smuggling drugs in the jail. Some of the inmates had opened bank accounts in the names of their relatives or acquaintances to transfer money, for which drugs were supplied inside the jail.

"The police were able to arrest the accused jail officials after the disclosure by some arrested people during interrogation that some jail officials had also been helping smuggle the drugs into the jail. The accused have been remanded to the police custody for one day," said inspector Lakhvir Singh, one of the officers of the special investigating team in the case.
