3 Haryana men held with poppy husk in Moga

The district police arrested three alleged smugglers, belonging to Haryana, near Daroli Bhai village, 13 km from district headquarter, and recovered huge quantity of poppy husk from their possession on Sunday.

According to the police, the contraband is worth Rs 5 crore in the international market.

Jatinder Singh Khaira, Moga senior superintendent of police (SSP) said the police had received a tip-off that some smugglers were entering the district to sell poppy husk.

“As soon as we received information, I formed a special team under the supervision of Jagtar Singh, incharge of the Moga Narcotic and Drug cell and barricaded various places across the district. We stopped an Innova car near Daroli Bhai and recovered 175 kg poppy husk from the vehicle. The driver and other people who were travelling in the car tried to flee the spot but after a long chase, the police succeeded in catching three smugglers,” said Khaira.

According to the police, the arrested people have been identified as Sukhdeep Singh, a resident of Haripur village; Mandeep Singh, a resident of Ellenabad in Sirsa district and Gurmeet Singh of Dhakka village of Haryana. Police said a smuggler who was also travelling in the car fled the spot.

“A case has been registered against the three under Sections 15, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. A special team has been formed to look into the matter,” he said.
