Three teenagers have been feared drowned in Sirhind Canal near Jassowal village in Dehlon on Saturday evening. The police have initiated rescue operation to find the victims, but to no avail.

According to sources, the victims, Surinder of Makkar colony, Giaspura; Juhar Singh and Vikas Kumar of Gill Road, had gone to the village to take dip in a canal flowing along the village.

The villagers said they saw the victims drowning and raised an alarm and also tried to rescue them, but all in vein. The victims fall in the age group of 17-18 years and were students of Class 10 at Ramgharia Senior Secondary School, Millar Gunj. They left the school on Saturday at 10 am.

The villagers added that the scooter and school bags of the trio were found from the banks of the canal.

On being informed, cops from Dehlon police station reached the spot and initiated investigation with the help of local divers. The victims were identified from the clothes found near the banks of canal.

The station house officer (SHO) at Dehlon police station Inderjit Singh said, “The rescue operation is on, but there is no clue of the teenagers. The adjoining police stations have also been informed. The police have also informed the victims’ families.”

He added that one of the family members said that the trio had left the house stating that they were going to pay fine for the challan slammed by traffic police to them and did not return back.

The SHO added that the boys belong to middle class families. On Sunday, the officials from district administration also visited at the spot.

Drowning incidents are on a rise in the city and most of the cases children and teenagers are victims. On May 30 too, two youths drowned while taking a dip in a canal at Khanpur village near Dehlon. On May 26, two school boys died in Sutlej Canal while taking a dip in cold water.
