As many as 3000 prisoners lodged in the district jail have received education under the Bharat Sakshar Mission and 58 of them have been given training certificates. Additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Sharandeep Kaur Brar distributed the certificates on Friday in a function organised by the district jail administration.

ADC Sharandeep Kaur Brar said the Bharat Sakshar Mission is a scheme under which the government provides up to three months of free education to a person who is uneducated and above 15 years of age. "We have given training certificates to 58 prisoners in today's function who were uneducated until they were provided an opportunity to study in the jail," she said.

The ADC later visited the library and computer lab in the jail premises. She also asked the jail authorities about the status of the prisoners.

The prisoners presented a cultural programme on the occasion.
