In yet another case of 'seduce and extort' racket, the local police on Monday arrested four persons, including a woman, and recovered extortion money of Rs 1.50 lakh.
They were arrested while accepting the cash from their victim near the ITI Chowk near the city.
The police arrested Shehzadi, her husband Intezar Khan, Shauqat Ali and Sham Lal and they will be produced in the court on Tuesday.
The racket was unearthed after a resident of Randoli village (name withheld to maintain privacy) near here had lodged a complaint to the Karnal deputy commissioner that he was harassed by a woman and her accomplices for extortion.
The complainant had also claimed that he had a petty dispute with a fellow villager Shauqat who hatched a conspiracy with his relatives to settle the score.
It was alleged that the accused had demanded Rs 6 lakh and threatened that in case of non-payment, the complainant would be charged with sexually harassment of the woman(who has now been arrested).
Civil Lines police station SHO Lalit Kumar said that the complaint alleged that the woman befriended him and then started demanding money.
"The complainant claimed that he was getting missed calls from an unknown number for the past few days and when one day he called back, a woman spoke on the phone and befriended him. Later, the two of them moved around Karnal and other places. In the meantime, the complainant started getting extortion calls from the woman and her accomplices," said the SHO.
Following directions of the DC, a team comprising the SHO and the naib tehsildar, was formed to lay a trap and arrest the accused.
The accused had agreed to "settle" the case for Rs 6 lakh and demanded Rs 1.50 lakh extortion in the first installment.
"Initially, the accused were scheduled to accept extortion money on Sunday but they did not turn up for unsaid reasons. However, as they came today at the fixed place near the ITI Chowk, the accused were arrested with the currency notes duly marked by the raiding team," he said.
On November 29, the police had arrested two women, identified as Kamalpreet Kaur of Jundla and Dilpreet alias Kamlesh of the Hansi Chowk area in the district. They were caught with Rs 2 lakh they had extorted from a Sonepat-based real estate dealer.
Accused Kamalpreet is also an accused in a drug peddling case registered in Karnal. The complainant had alleged that the two women were threatening to implicate him in a false rape case and were demanding Rs 30 lakh.
After the victim produced audio clips to buttress his claim, the local SP Abhishek Garg formed a team under deputy superintendent of police (headquarters) Satish Kumar to probe the matter.
The team laid a trap and arrested the women near a mall in Sector 12 and recovered Rs 2 lakh, which were duly marked by the district officials for the official operation to nab the accused.
In another case on December 11, the city police arrested three people, including a nurse and a doctor of Mahavir Dal Charitable Hospital here, on the charge of extorting money from a fellow doctor in the name of settling an alleged false case of sexual harassment.
The nurse had allegedly sent an obscene MMS clip from the doctor's personal phone on her phone and started threatening of filing a case of sexual harassment against him.
