The local police on Wednesday claimed to have busted the ‘Sukha Barewala gang’, which was involved in several cases of snatching, with the arrest of its five members.

The police also recovered a stolen car from the accused, besides one .315 bore countrymade gun with 10 rounds, three.32 bore pistols with 40 rounds and one.12 bore gun with 25 rounds.

Those arrested have been identified as Sukhpreet Singh alias Sukha, resident of Barewal Awana, Ludhiana; Jagga Singh of Daraj village, Barnala; Buta Singh of Mehal Kalan village, Bar nala; Inderjit Singh of Bhaini Baringa village, Jagraon; and Jarnail Singh of Balian (Kattu) village, Sangrur.

Giving details of the arrest, police commissioner Paramjit Singh Gill said a police party led by Harbans Singh, incharge, anti-narcotics cell, Ludhiana, had set up a special barrier on Hambran Road on Wednesday.

“Around 5.30am, a Mahindra Verito (PB-09T-4488) was seen coming from Hambran village side. When the police party signalled the vehicle to stop, instead of doing so, the driver tried to escape after hitting the cops. However, due to a strong and effective barrier, they could not succeed in escaping and were nabbed by the cops,” Gill said.

During preliminary investigation and interrogation of accused, it came to the fore that the accused, Sukhpreet Singh, along with Jagga Singh and Jarnail Singh, had snatched the Mahindra Verito, along with 2 lakh in cash and gold jewellery on gunpoint, after kidnapping the car’s owner Kewal Krishan, a resident of Jaito Mandi, Sirsa, and his driver, and later thrown them out near Burj village in Mansa.

A case regarding this incident was registered at GRP police station, Sirsa. The police commissioner said all accused were facing trial in several cases.

Following their attempt to escape on Wednesday, the accused have been booked under section 307 (attempt to murder), 353 (creating hurdles in official duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of 50), at Haibowal police station.
