A 46-year-old man, identified as Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Sangh Dhesian village, was found murdered under mysterious circumstances at a dera in the village near Goraya town of the district on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. The victim had been living near the dera for the past six months.
The incident came to light around 9 am when some passersby noticed the body lying in a pool of blood in the dera premises.
Following information, a police team, led by Phillaur deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Sarbjeet Rai and Goraya station house officer (SHO) Jarnail Singh rushed to the spot and started a probe.
The cops suspected an old rivalry of the victim as he had been facing 11 criminal cases registered from 1986 to 2001 against him at Goraya, Phillaur and other police stations of the district.
The SHO said that he was acquitted in seven cases and had undergone sentence in two cases while the status of two cases is yet to not known.
“We will investigate the case from various angles to find out the motive of the crime,” he added. The SHO told that the victim was killed with a sharpedged weapon. His body has been sent to the civil hospital for postmortem.
A murder case has been registered against unidentified persons, Singh added.
